Know what you are getting. A Pre-Purchase survey is one of the best ways, short of being an expert yourself, to determine whether or not the boat is worth it, safe, and sound. It's not about trusting the seller or not, it is about protecting your interests. The completed survey report is also suitable for insurance and finance purposes.

Most insurance companies require a vessel inspection by an accredited marine surveyor in order to determine its condition and value. Survey findings may include specific recommendations for remedy of particular defects.

I also offer a “walkthrough” type inspection. This service is useful for out of town buyers in deciding whether or not to incur travel costs to see a boat in the local area which may not be suitable. A prospective buyer would need to obtain permission from the boat owner / broker who would be present, as if “showing” the boat. My reporting would be verbal only but would include several photos of particular conditions sighted.
